Gilfeather Turnip Festival celebrates Vermont's state vegetable this weekend

WARDSBORO-This year's Gilfeather Turnip Festival, the annual celebration of Vermont's state vegetable in the town where it was born, is being held - rain, shine, or snow - on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Wardsboro.

Join in with a bowl of Gilfeather Turnip Soup at the outdoor kiosk, sample turnip-based treats at the Turnip Cafébuffet, grab some turnip french fries, take home some turnip-themed merchandise in the Turnip Patch shop, and browse the unique creations of local craft vendors.

The Wardsboro Public Library will hold a used book sale, and 1,000 pounds of Gilfeather turnips will be available for sale at the Turnip Cart.

A historical talk about John Gilfeather will take place at 11:30 a.m. and noon in the Yoked Parish Church across from Town Hall, and the short film The Gilfeather Turnip: Rooted in Wardsboro (2004) will be playing at the Wardsboro Public Library.

The Turnip Contest awards prizes for the largest Gilfeather turnip grown in Wardsboro, the largest grown outside Wardsboro, and the best dressed. U.S. Rep. Becca Balint is scheduled to be the contest judge this year.

Packets of Gilfeather Turnip seeds will be on sale for those dreaming of growing something to enter in next year's contest. Turnip grower Stephen Chamberlain will be available to answer your questions on how best to grow Gilfeathers.
