BRATTLEBORO-Flutist, vocalist, and composer Elena Pinderhughes will both perform and teach as part of the Vermont Jazz Center’s (VJC) ninth annual Emerging Artist Festival, which celebrates the next generation of jazz artists.
The Pinderhughes concert will cap off the two-day festival Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the VJC, 72 Cotton Mill Hill, #222.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Pinderhughes has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the White House. Her first solo album, i hope you feel it too, came out earlier this month.
Pinderhughes has toured with other jazz artists, including pianist Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Chief Adjuah, and she collaborates across genres, having played with guitarist Carlos Santana, rapper Common, and hip-hop duo Future and Metro Boomin.
When she was 19, The Guardian’s jazz critic John Fordham praised Pinderhughes as “the most exciting and creatively assured jazz flutist to have emerged in years.”
The Emerging Artist Festival will also feature student performers from area high schools and a free clinic with Pinderhughes, during which she “will discuss her young life in music, technical approach, rehearsal strategies, and creative philosophy,” organizers said in a news release.
