‘The Hungry Heart’ comes to Leland & Gray

Film about prescription drug abuse in Vermont to be shown Jan. 29

TOWNSHEND — A free showing will take place of the film The Hungry Heart, which provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of prescription drug addiction.

The film brings the audience into and takes them through the world of St. Albans pediatrician Fred Holmes, who works with patients struggling with this disease and prescribes Suboxen as part of their treatment.

In addition to students and parents/guardians involved in co-curricular activities, the film is open to all students, staff, and community members. Leland & Gray will feature the movie in the Dutton Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m. (snow date: Feb. 5).

Before the film, a reception for all moviegoers will be provided beginning at 5:45 p.m. in the student Activity Room, sponsored by the West River Valley Thrives Coalition.

Afterwards, filmmaker Bess O'Brien, Dr. Holmes, his patients, and family members will present and answer questions from the audience. Earlier that day, they will present at a school assembly and meet with doctors at Grace Cottage Hospital to discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in our area.

The film shines a light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many young addicts yearn for, but do not have in their lives. Throughout the movie, you'll see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their continued search for a life of recovery.
