Moore Library showcases local artists in ‘Elements’

NEWFANE — The Moore Free Library/Crowell Gallery, 23 West St., presents in July a multi-artist exhibition of art in fiber, ceramic, and print.

“Elements” features Jackie Abrams, Patricia Burleson, Kris McDermet, Susan Osgood, Lauri Richardson, and Deidre Scherer. An artists' reception is set at the library for Saturday, July 5, from 3 to 5 p.m.

“Elements” is a celebration of six artists working in diverse media. Drawing inspiration from their surroundings, they all share a passion for the basic elements of art: shape, form, line, color, light, movement, texture, and space.

Abrams uses contemporary basketry techniques to create sculptural forms, using fabrics, paper, stones, earth, wire, paint, and media.

Burleson paints with dyes on silk, creating wall hangings, caftans, and chuppah.

McDermet combines traditional rug hooking and rug braiding in contemporary designs using wool, silk, and Nuno felting.

Osgood paints abstractly in oils and gouache, from small to large scale, and also makes monotype prints.

Richardson plays with metaphors in her upcycled 2-D and 3-D ceramic mosaics.

Scherer creates figurative work in thread on layered fabric. She introduces torn-paper weavings based on digital prints of these originals.

The exhibition opens at the Moore Free Library's Crowell Gallery in Newfane July 2 through 26.
