MSA features talk on history of Land Rover vehicle

SAXTONS RIVER — The history and popularity of the Land Rover motor vehicle will be on display as Jim Macri presents a talk at Main Street Arts on Thursday, Oct. 29 entitled “The Land Rover: The Iconic Vehicle.”

The talk in the Taste of the Arts, Tales from the Community series will be preceded by a display in front of Main Street Arts, beginning at 5 p.m., of Macri's High Meadow Farm collection of the British vehicles.

Recognized the world over, it is estimated that the Land Rover was the first motor vehicle ever seen by almost 40 per cent of the world's population. It was developed in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, the chief designer of the Rover Company, who said he was inspired by the utility, strength and versatility of the World War II American military Jeep that he used one summer at his holiday home in Wales.

Built using the chassis and components of a Jeep, the first Land Rover was unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948.

Macri will trace the story of this remarkable group of vehicles from early development and design through restoration of the most representative models.

A dinner at 6 p.m. will precede Macri's presentation.
