I found Evangelina Holvino's article [“Latinos in Vermont: Why we matter,” The Commons, October] filled with the same mantra that I`ve read in all Latino articles. It's the same lesson they feel compelled to teach us Americans: their importance both culturally and financially in this society, how we Americans had better get the big picture, etc.
Her article was peppered with sarcasm, such as we should all be bilingual in this global world.
Let me say that if I move to Puerto Rico I promise to learn Spanish, especially if I choose to make it my homeland. Some of us were not offered the opportunies to learn a second language as the children are given today.
I also found her ending thought - "there is a moral and legal case for equality for all" - offensive.
I do believe, Ms. Holvino, that we Americans know that better then most, since our forefathers suffered horribly to make this great country the “home of the free."
I believe, Ms. Holvino, it is you who needs a lesson in familismo, respecto, and personalismo - American style.
