Building a culture of peace is subject of WWAC talk

BRATTLEBORO — The Windham World Affairs Council will present Dr. David Adams, who will talk on “The Culture of Peace” on Friday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the Marlboro College Graduate Center, 28 Vernon St.

This talk is free and open to the public. Coffee, cookies, and conversation will begin at 7 p.m.

Adams has been devoting his energies to the Global Movement for a Culture of Peace for many years. He believes that we are currently going through an especially dangerous period of history comparable to the years prior to World War II and the worst years of the Cold War.

In his talk, he will propose a two-pronged approach: “First we need to continue developing consciousness that a culture of peace is possible. And second, we need to begin developing an institutional framework for a culture of peace to replace today's institutions mired in the culture of war."

Adams' approach is based on his experience as a scientific expert on both the brain mechanisms of aggressive behavior and on peace psychology, his experience working in the old Soviet Union, his years as a director of UNESCO (including responsibility for the United Nations International Year for the Culture of Peace), his work as an historian (“History of the Culture of War”), and his work with the New Haven City Peace Commission.

Currently he is the coordinator of the Culture of Peace News Network and publishes a monthly Internet bulletin and blog on devoted to the culture of peace.
