Series of art-themed films comes to village

BELLOWS FALLS — The Rockingham Arts and Museum Project (RAMP), Sherwin Art Glass, Flying Canvas Studio and Hunter Studios are hosting the film, “Mr. Turner,” starring British actor Timothy Spall and directed by Mike Leigh, on Wednesday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m., as part of Classic Movie Night at the Bellows Falls Opera House.

The film is an acclaimed 2014 biographical drama that focuses on the last 25 years of the life and career of landscape painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851).

“Mr. Turner” is the first of several art-themed films to be shown as part of Classic Movie Nights at the Bellows Falls Opera House. The idea arose in March at an Artists' Town Meeting, a collaborative of artists and artisans who gather quarterly to share ideas, challenges, opportunities and a potluck. Local painter Charlie Hunter offered to underwrite the film to kick-off the series, according to a news release.

RAMP, which hosts the Artists' Town Meetings, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. RAMP focuses on integrating artists and the arts into the long-term sustainability efforts of the community.

Three artworks, donated by Jeanette Staley, Robert McBride and Chris Sherwin, will be raffled. Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25 and will benefit a fund to host additional art-themed classic films. The cost to underwrite a film is generally $250; interested parties should contact RAMP.

The film also serves to highlight the Open Studio Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when artist studios, designated with yellow balloons and placards will be open to the public. Details are available at www.vermontcrafts.com/links/open.html.
