Three memoirists will read to benefit Next Stage

PUTNEY — On Wednesday, June 1, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Green Writers Press and Next Stage Arts Project will present readings from three leading memoirists, according to a news release.

M Jackson, author of “While Glaciers Slept: Being Human in a Time of Climate Change,” will give a talk and slide show on her work in Iceland.

John Elder, Vermont nature writer and former Stewart Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, will read from his memoir, “Picking Up the Flute: A Memoir with Music.”

Rounding out the evening will be former Vermont state poet laureate Sydney Lea, who will read from his new memoir and essay collection “What's the Story? Reflections on a Life Grown Long.”

Green Writers Press, a small Brattleboro-based publishing company founded by Dede Cummings in 2014, is dedicated to spreading environmental awareness by publishing authors “who proliferate messages of hope and renewal through place-based writing and environmental activism.”

In the past three years, Green Writers Press has expanded significantly, publishing such authors as Julia Alvarez, Neil Shepard, and (upcoming) Clarence Major and Putney's own Tim Weed.

The three distinguished authors at Next Stage on June 1 will read from their work, Jackson will show slides of glaciers, and there will be live music courtesy of Elder and his Irish flute.

Jackson, Lea, and Elder will be introduced by Green Writers Press founder Dede Cummings, along with editor Rose Alexandre-Leach of Brattleboro.

The three readings will last for one hour, followed by a reception at Next Stage Arts.
