Talk on learning differences kicks off Landmark College Summer Institute

PUTNEY — On Sunday, June 19, at 7:30 p.m., Brock Eide, M.D., will present a free talk titled “How Should We Think About Learning Differences? Why It's Time For a New Approach,” according to a news release.

Eide and his wife, Fernette Eide, M.D., are the authors of the book “The Dyslexic Advantage” and the founders of the nonprofit advocacy organization Dyslexic Advantage (www.dyslexicadvantage.org).

Landmark College invites local and regional educators, professionals, community members, parents, and adults and teens who learn differently to attend. The talk will be the keynote address for the 26th annual Landmark College Summer Institute.

Historically, learning differences have been treated primarily as disabilities. In this presentation, Eide will describe a new approach that starts from the premise that many learning differences represent normal and healthy patterns of brain diversity, with strengths as well as challenges resulting from these different patterns of organization.

He will focus primarily on his work and research with dyslexic individuals to describe how this different approach looks, and the difference it can make for education, employment, and self-concept, according to the news release.

Limited space is still available for the Landmark College Summer Institute, which runs June 19-22 and includes workshops and three-day strands for educators and other professionals who work with students who learn differently. Registration is required for the Summer Institute (but not for the keynote address). To learn more, visit www.landmark.edu/LCSI.

Eide's talk will be held in the Brooks M. O'Brien Auditorium in the East Academic Building at Landmark College, located at 19 River Road South in Putney. The event is free, accessible, and open to the public.
