WHITINGHAM — We are very concerned about the Windham Solid Waste Management District.
We question how the district's net liquid assets of $486,000 have been whittled away since June 30, 2012 to the extent that the district (including us, the member towns) is now $100,000 in debt?
It seems clear that gross mismanagement is the answer. The complete lack of fiscal responsibility shown by the district is outrageous. We feel the lack of foresight in how to deal with the ever-changing commodities market most likely caused this financial problem.
Are Selectboards aware of this crisis?
The Whitingham Selectboard would like other towns to join us to respectfully demand that WSWMD tighten its belt and stop the frivolous spending.
We also recommended that it stop wasting employee and director's time and effort on researching whether to keep the Materials Recovery Facility going. It was already voted by the supervisors to close the MRF. Shut it down! Sooner, rather than later.
We urge Selectboards to advise their representative to vote no on taking out any loans. A responsible alternative would be to sell the equipment and trucks and then take a hard look at the viability of keeping the district running.
Increasing assessments to cover these losses is not being responsible to our taxpayers.
