Summer Solstice at Manitou features sound healing and dance

WILLIAMSVILLE — Two beloved local Summer Solstice traditions - the incomparable SIMBA dance party in Dummerston, and sacred dance and music in the forests of Manitou in Williamsville - could hardly be more different.

But this year, they're coming together on June 21.

After 30 years, SIMBA won't perform its Solstice celebration. But two of its artists, multi-instrumentalist Derrik Jordan and dancer Rupa Cousins, with others, will lead a different kind of music and dance experience in the Manitou woods - a sound healing concert with hand pan, tabla, fiddle, and wind instruments follow a shared circle of paneurhythmy honoring our community with Nature, according to a news release.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a walk into the woods followed by sacred circle dancing/paneurhythmy. At 6:15, the concert with Derrik Jordan and Jed Blume begins. Jordan and Blume are multi-instrumentalists, composers, and performers of evocative music inspired by cultures close to the land.

Tax-deductible contributions are gratefully accepted to help support the artists in this family-friendly celebration. Wear comfortable clothes and bring bug juice. The rain date is Friday, June 23.
