Write Action names contest winners

BRATTLEBORO — Winners of the 2017 Write Action Poetry and Prose Contest were announced at this year's annual picnic by judges Joe Mazur (prose) and James Kate (poetry).

For prose, Elayne Clift took first prize for “Navigating the Unknown.” Steve Lloyd won second place for “Like Any Boy,” and Andy Reichsman was third for “Winter.”

Beneth Goldschmidt-Sauer won first prize in poetry for “Dream” (for HFC, 1959-1977). There was a tie for second place between Lynn Valente for “The Wind,” and Melinda Underwood for “What If What If Is True?”

Judge Nancy Olson chose Olivia Howe as winner in both youth poetry and youth prose categories for both “By the Garden” and “June” in poetry, and in prose for “He Called Himself Randall Peeples.”

The first-place winners in all three categories will read at the Brattleboro Literary Festival Spotlight Reading, a Write Action organized event, on Saturday, Oct. 14.
