Book clubs at Village Square Booksellers

BELLOWS FALLS - Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls has several book clubs led by Myles Mickle and Pat Fowler. Different topics and meeting at different times of the day enables customers to pick and choose which discussion group to attend.

Mickle has chosen a nonfiction book, All The President's Men, in which Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the Washington Post reporters whose Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation smashed the Watergate scandal wide open, tell the behind-the-scenes drama the way it really happened. The discussion will be held on Friday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Fowler has chosen Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. Picoult is known for presenting a moral dilemma in each of her books. Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than 20 years' experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she's been reassigned to another patient.

The parents are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is African-American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. The Evening Book Club will meet on Thursday, April 19, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Classics Quarterly will meet on Wednesday, April 25, from 4 to 6 p.m., to discuss Moby Dick by Herman Melville, led by Myles. Moby Dick is a tale of obsession and vengeance, but also contains surprising commentary on storytelling, race, sexuality, philosophy, industry and much more.

Books are available at the store and receive a 20 percent discount for the in-house book clubs. Pick up copies of books at the bookstore and sign up to attend at the store or by calling 802-463-9404. Light refreshments will be served at all sessions.

Grace Cottage hosts free workshop on addictive eating disorders

TOWNSHEND - Grace Cottage Hospital is offering a free support group for the community called “Overcoming Addictive Food Behavior,” starting Wednesaday, April 18, and meeting for 11 weeks. Pre-registration is required.

This course will follow the program offered in the best-selling “Love Hunger Weight-Loss Workbook.” The multi-faceted approach, based on the 12 Step recovery program, has helped countless people develop lifelong lifestyle changes for lasting weight loss and better health.

The group will be facilitated by Behavioral Health Specialist Caroline Chase and Health Coach Liz Harrison. It will meet weekly from April 18 to June 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., in the Grace Cottage Community Wellness Center (Heins Building), 133 Grafton Rd.
