Students to display pottery, sculpture in March

BRATTLEBORO — Pottery and sculpture by area high school students will be on display for the month of March at Vermont Artisan Designs to celebrate the 40th year of Student Art Month in Brattleboro. The opening will be during the March 1 Gallery Walk.

Traditionally, Student Art Month has been an effort coordinated by the Arts Council of Windham County.

According to a news release, the Arts Council is reorganizing this year and the new members decided they are unable to coordinate the effort, which usually includes two-dimensional artwork, three-dimensional work (pottery and sculpture), and artwork by elementary students displayed at the library and Zephyr Designs.

“We have hosted the 3-D work of area high school students for a number of years,” said Greg Worden of Vermont Artisan Designs, “and we decided to continue that portion of Student Art Month in March. We contacted the high school art teachers and they all were pleased that the exhibit would still happen this year.”

Works by students from Brattleboro Union High School, Bellows Falls Union High School, Leland & Gray Union High School, The Putney School, Vermont Academy, and Twin Valley High School are expected to be shown at Vermont Artisan Designs. The gallery is located at 106 Main St. in Brattleboro.

As part of the show of student work, visitors will be able to vote for their favorite piece of pottery or sculpture, as in past years.

“The opportunity to vote gives people a reason to look closely at the student work. It's really heartening to see people take the time to really consider each piece of student art,” said Worden, who noted that the students' work isn't for sale.

According to Brooks Memorial Library, art by elementary school students will be shown at the library in April and coordinated by Marie Procter.
