• Wynona Meyer of Guilford recently graduated summa cum laude from Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., with a B.A. in psychology and contemporary critical theory.
• The following local residents recentlyreceived degrees from the Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology: James Bourque of East Dover received a B.S. in mechanical engineering technology, James Ferris of Brattleboro received a B.S. in computer science, and Cesar Augusto Rabello Borges Filho of Brattleboro received a B.S. in biomedical engineering.
• Meka Dearborn of Brattleboro achieved Dean's List honors during the spring 2019 semester at Vermont Technical College. Dearborn is pursuing an A.A.S. in the Equine Studies program.
• Christine Downs of Brookline and Kaya Mulligan of South Londonderry were named to the Champlain College President's List for achieving a grade point average of 4.0 or higher in the spring 2019 semester.
• Connor Greene of Westminster Station, Colt Hazell of Searsburg, and Alexander Houk of Brattleboro, were named to the Champlain College Dean's List for achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the spring 2019 semester.
• Rory Cuerdon of Putney, a member of the class of 2020 majoring in aerospace engineering, was named to the Dean's List for the spring 2019 semester at Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute.
School news
• Jackson Barnes and Wulff Lauterbach of Guilford, Anita Blossom and Samuel Kendrick of Saxtons River, Gwen Coger of Chester, Miranda Fuller of Putney, Sydney Henry of Brattleboro, Maureen Hughes of Westminster, Anika Kapral of Dummerston, John Peloso of Townshend and Cody Thurber of Bellows Falls graduated with Vermont Academy's Class of 2019 during the school's 135th commencement on May 25. Blossom and Kendrick graduated cum laude. Blossom, Henry and Kapral graduated as members of Vermont Academy's National Honor Society chapter. This fall, Blossom will attend Tufts University, Kendrick will attend Kalamazoo College, Coger will attend the University of Vermont, Fuller will attend Bennington College, Henry will attend Salve Regina University, Hughes will attend West Virginia University, Kapral will attend St. Michael's College, Peloso will attend Stonehill College and Thurber will attend Jacksonville University. In all, Vermont Academy graduated 75 students from nine different countries.
• The Brattleboro Lodge of Masons recently presented two $500 scholarships to Makayla LaFlam and Josh Nordheim, both graduating seniors at Brattleboro Union High School. LaFlam was an outstanding student at the Windham Regional Career Center; she made the honor roll all four years. In addition to her course load and holding down several jobs, she was a member of the BUHS varsity softball team, president of Future Farmers of America, a volunteer for Girls on the Run, president of 4H, and a horse event volunteer. She hopes to major in therapeutic equine science in college. Nordheim, a National Honor Society inductee, graduated with Honors. He was active in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), serving one year as an officer of the club, and participated in the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary's Junior Rotarian program. As a BUHS athlete, he played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, and was a four-year varsity player on the tennis team. He plans to attend the University of New Hampshire in the fall to study business with a concentration in marketing.
Awards
• Mark Considine of Rescue Inc. in Brattleboro was recently honored by the American Ambulance Association at its annual Stars of Life Awards in Washington, D.C. Considine has played a very active role at Rescue Inc, over the past 33 years and formerly served as its Chief. Although he has stepped down from that role, he continues to be actively involved with training new Paramedics. He also works as a front-line Critical Care Paramedic.
Obituaries
• Alfred G. “Fred” Beaudoin, 73, of West Brattleboro. Died July 1, 2019. He was born Jan. 29, 1946 in Charterville, Quebec, Canada, one of 17 children born to Helene (Martineau) and Napoleon Beaudoin. He was raised on a large farm. Although he had an eighth-grade education, he made some amazing strides in his life. After working as a logger, he moved to Manchester, N.H., where he was an electrical lineman before he moved to Brattleboro. He met and married Nancy Pond in 1965, who survives. He was a devoted husband and father. Alfred had a roofing business for 30 years and was the “man in the window” and neighborhood watch on Abbott Road. He loved his family and friends, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to his camp in Canada. He was predeceased by a son, John Beaudoin. He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Beaudoin, and the “add-on son” he raised, Kevin Pond. He is also survived by grandchildren Becky Pond, Safija Beaudoin, Samantha Richardson, and Noah Beaudoin, all of whom loved and learned from him. Memorial information: A celebration of his life will be held in July 2020 at his camp in Canada.
• Stephen James Coughlin, 65, formerly of Brattleboro. Died July 10, 2019. He was born on July 2, 1954 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital to Michael and Bernice Coughlin. He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1973. He lived in Napa, Calif. for the majority of his life, until his recent death. He made his living doing masonry and carpentry, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and skiing. He is survived by his mother, Bernice Coughlin, and his two brothers Daniel and Michael Coughlin, as well as sister-in-law Lynn Coughlin. Stephen is also survived by his nephews and nieces; Melissa Coughlin, Amy Coughlin, Dana Coughlin, Erik Coughlin, Michael Coughlin, Blaine Coughlin and Evan Coughlin. His youngest brother, Gary Coughlin, died in 2013, and his father died in 1973. Memorial information: Services will be private.
• Andrew Lucas Eames, 32, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 15, 2019, from the disease of addiction. He was born July 15, 1987, to his parents Anne Latchis and the late Alan D. Eames. He is survived by his mother Anne, loving brother and sister Adrian and Elena, nephew Alex, grandmother Marina and grandfather Demetrius, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his dearest friend Liz Keefe. Memorial information: Graveside services will be conducted Friday, July 19, at 10 a.m., in the Latchis family lot in Morningside Cemetery. • Jonathan Starbuck “Jon” Tobey, 92, of Brattleboro. Died June 22 2019 at his home. He was born on Sept. 15, 1926 in Dartmouth, Mass., the son of Molly Nye and Warren P. Tobey. He grew up in Barrington, R.I., and attended school there. He and his twin brother, Josh Tobey, and younger brother, Joel Tobey, enjoyed and competed in many sports throughout high school. He attended Brown University but interrupted his studies to serve in the Navy in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Henrico. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and graduated from Brown in 1950. While there, Jon was part of Brown's track and field team. He later received a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University, where he was assistant professor of marketing and farm management for five years. He went on to work as vice president and technical director of agriculture at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City from 1965 to 1976. He retired with his wife, Anne Tobey, and they moved to Townshend in 1976 where Jon enjoyed teaching cross-country skiing, helping with Grace Cottage Hospital's Fair Days, and running the Townshend Corner Store for two years. Anne and Jon moved to Brattleboro in 1994. Sporting and athletics remained a passion throughout Jon's life. He set national age group records in the Green Mountain Senior Games and the U.S. Senior Olympics, in the 800 and 1,500 meters in 1989. In 1994, he received the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Award. When he was 90 years old, the Rhode Island House of Representatives inducted Jon into the Barrington High School, Class of 1944, Athletic Hall of Fame. He was fun-loving, and enjoyed volunteering at local sporting events - the fund raiser 5K for Grace Cottage Hospital, the Red Clover Rover runs, the Turkey Trot, the Pond-a-thon Fun Run, the annual Harris Hill Ski Jump, helping with the ski tow at Living Memorial Park, and many Brattleboro Outing Club activities. He took pride in setting the drag for the Guilford Hounds fox hunts for many years. Jon had a creative spirit and a green thumb. He loved his vegetable garden, backyard wildlife, painting and wood working. He appreciated the spirit and camaraderie of bowling with the Senior League in Brattleboro for many years, maple sugaring with friends, and growing giant pumpkins for the Guilford Fair. Jon felt at home being on the water, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. He was always up for an outdoor adventure, exploring nature, and he spent many summers with his family at the beach in Madison, Conn., and coastal Maine later in life. He loved family gatherings and told grand and lively stories to family, friends and neighbors. Jon was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Anne Pierson Tobey, his brother, Joel Tobey and twin brother, Josh Tobey. He is survived by his son, Peter Tobey of West Windsor, Vt.; his daughter, Katie Tobey of Brattleboro; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Tobey of Barrington, and Doris Tobey of Centre Hall, Pa.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews, 18 great-nieces and nephews, and one great-great niece and one great,-great nephew. • David J. Wallace, 72, of Westminster. Died July 5, 2019 at Thompson House in Brattleboro, following a period of declining health. He was born in Goffstown, N.H., on Sept. 11, 1946, the son of Joseph and Hazel (Colburn) Wallace. He was raised and educated in the Goffstown area, where he attended public schools. A former resident of Guilford, David moved to Westminster in 2005. He worked as a machine operator for Fibermark in Brattleboro, joining the company when it was owned by Boise Cascade. He retired from Fibermark in 2011 following many years of faithful service with the company. David was mechanically inclined and enjoyed tinkering and repairing anything that needed to be fixed. He also liked to garden and assisted with the flower gardens at Thompson House. In 1991 in Guilford, he was married to Barbara Grant, who predeceased him in July of 2017. Survivors include one daughter, Laura Wallace of Jaffrey, N.H., a stepson, Richard Parsons of Vernon, one step-daughter, Kimberly Gassett of Hinsdale, N.H., seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Debra J. Wallace in 2003, two brothers, Howard and Edward, and a sister, Jean.
