BRATTLEBORO — Maybe you've never read Austen's debut novel or maybe it's an old favorite worth revisiting. What keeps readers and adapters coming back to this classic novel?
Join other Jane Austen fans and neophytes for a multi-media study group at Brooks Memorial Library during four Saturdays in March and April.
Participants will read and discuss Austen's 1811 novel, view the award-winning Ang Lee film (1995), sit in on a rehearsal, and attend a matinee performance of the Kate Hamill 2014 stage adaptation at the New England Youth Theatre, directed by Hallie Flower.
Here is the event schedule:
• Saturday, March 14, 1 to 3 p.m.: Book discussion at Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main St. A limited number of copies of the novel are available for loan.
• Saturday, March 21, 1 to 3 p.m.: Visit a rehearsal at New England Youth Theatre, 100 Flat St.
• Saturday, April 4, 1 to 3 p.m.: Watch Ang Lee film at library.
• Saturday, April 11, 2 p.m.: Attend performance at NEYT ($8 discounted ticket fee).
Discussions will be facilitated by Sara Glennon, professor of English at Landmark College. A Jane Austen fan for more than 40 years, Glennon can't get enough of reading, studying, and discussing Austen, her work, and her growing fandom.
Signing up in advance (at the Brooks Library front desk) will secure a place for the visits to NEYT to observe a rehearsal and chat with cast and crew (March 21) and to see the play (April 11).
Participants will need to pay for their own tickets on April 11 for $8 (a limited number of discounted tickets are reserved). Glennon will also email reading and study questions and supplemental material to those who share their email addresses when registering.
Feel free to direct questions to the library at 802-254-5290 or to Glennon at sglennon@landmark.edu.
