BRATTLEBORO — Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts presents “Amy Arbus, On the Street 1980-1990,” on Saturday, Oct. 10, from noon to 7 p.m., with an appearance by the artist from 5 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition, which continues through Sunday, Nov. 22, represents “a selection of cutting edge photographs [that] singly and as a collection tap into a spirit of self-importance, idealism, and fierce individuality,” as described in a news release from the gallery.
Between 1980 and 1990, more than 500 of photographer Amy Arbus's impromptu and edgy portraits of New Yorkers appeared in The Village Voice's monthly fashion feature “On the Street.”
According to writer A.M. Homes, “the column's missive was to document the city's most adventurous trendsetters as they went about their lives[...].”
Arbus, Homes wrote, “combed the streets looking for those who were dressed for success and poised for fame. By focusing on the fearlessly non-conformist, her photographs offer a startling and seamless blend of fashion, portraiture, and street theater.”
Gallery owners Petria Mitchell and Jim Giddings assure potential visitors that “safety protocols of face masks, social distancing, and limits to audience size will be followed during the opening and throughout the exhibition.”
