Gallery exhibit honors heroes of the pandemic

BRATTLEBORO — “Pandemic Heroes” is the theme of Gallery 34 at River Gallery's April exhibition, highlighting the artistic works of nationally recognized artist Lori Schreiner, of Brattleboro.

The display features the artist's interpretation of 12 individuals who have been “quite recognizable, and perhaps even controversial, during the course of the pandemic,” according to a news release.

“Ranging from Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases to George Floyd, the victim of racial violence by police, the exhibition is said to be intense and thought-provoking.”

These portraits were created during a Zoom studio class sponsored by the River Gallery School of Art with Lydia Thomson, Teaching Artist. This show is dedicated to George Floyd.

The exhibit features the artist's rendition of such individuals as “Mother and Son Reunited at the Border” and “NYC ICU Nurse.” Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is among those portrayed in the artist's work.

Also included in the exhibit is an expanded display of works by local artist Carol Boyes and other local artists associated with the nonprofit art school.

Schreiner's paintings appear in a 2012 book, Painting Czeslawa Kwoka: Honoring Children of the Holocaust, accompanying poems by Theresa Senato Edwards.

“Pandemic Heroes” runs through April at the River Gallery at 34 Main St., open Monday through Thursday by appointment at 802-257-2677, as well as every Sunday 10 a.m. to noon.
