BRATTLEBORO — The Vermont Theatre Company will hold auditions for its upcoming production of Rathmines Road, written by Dierdre Kinahan, Monday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hooker Dunham Theater and Gallery (HDTG), 139 Main St., Brattleboro.
The show will be performed at HDTG April 29–May 1 and May 6–8.
Interested actors are asked to prepare two contrasting contemporary monologues whose total time should not exceed four minutes. Auditions will be held in four 30-minute sections. For more information or to schedule an audition Feb. 28 or an alternate time, contact director Charlene Kennedy at charlenekennedy127@yahoo.com.
Set over one evening, Rathmines Road is described in a news release as “a play that rages in a tiny room. Fraught, funny, and ferocious, it testifies to the pain of carrying the memory of sexual assault throughout a lifetime. A play about secret trauma and public revelation, Rathmines Road bristles with tension and interrogates catharsis to ask: when and how do we take responsibility?”
The show features five characters, all in the mid-40s: two married couples and a former high school classmate who is a trans woman. The play premiered at the Abbey Theatre as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2018 and has been performed in the United States only one time.
VTC says it is “committed to equal employment opportunities and welcomes diversity and inclusion across the spectrum of race, gender, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation” and “is committed to providing a respectful, inclusive and safe environment for the audition process free from harassment, discrimination, or bullying.”
They also caution that this production “contains material related to sexual violence that some may find upsetting and disturbing, and therefore we encourage all candidates to research the issues raised in this show to ascertain their comfortability in exploring this content throughout the process.”
