‘Rathmines Road’ opens VTC season

BRATTLEBORO — The Vermont Theatre Company will present performances of Rathmines Road, by Deirdre Kinahan, from April 29 through May 1 and May 6 though May 8 at the Hooker-Dunham Theater and Gallery at 139 Main St.

Rathmines Road is a challenging piece of theater for both actors and audiences, but it is all too relevant, which director Charlene Kennedy says is what drew her to the show.

In 2018, she and her partner happened to catch a performance of the world premiere at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland.

“The Kavanaugh hearings had recently been concluded and the topic of sexual assault and the question of truth had filled the news and social media for weeks,” Kennedy said in a news release. “Rathmines Road explored the same questions of sexual assault and those of secret traumas: How long can a secret be held? At what cost? How does a traumatic event held in secret affect a person? What is the price of breaking the silence and who will pay it?”

The opening night performance on Friday, April 29 will be followed by a talkback session with a representative from the Women's Freedom Center. Additionally, $1 for each ticket sold during the 2021–2022 season will be donated to Safe Place Child Advocacy, which provides services to both children and adults who have endured physical and/or sexual violence.
