NEWFANE-During the month of October Crowell Art Gallery at Moore Free Library, 23 West Street, will present a variety of art work by Nora Daniel.
The show will be taking place until October 29th.
The title of the show is "Think Ink"– exhibiting ink drawings and paintings that vary between relatively realistic and more expressive, with a few watercolor pieces.
Daniel has been doing these ink pieces for decades.
The subjects range from people, animals, landscape, and more!
Daniel explains more about the theme of her show– "The idea of the importance of carrying a sketchbook with you and drawing whenever you can… it's a form of visual journaling, as well as staying connected to art and expression and creativity."
"I love the balance between something that is relatively representational and the abstract, that balance I think keeps things interesting."
Daniel explains how this form of art leaves a lot to the imagaination.
"I like the interaction between the viewer and the work, and the possibility that imagination interpretation can be stimulated through
Artwork." Daniel said.
The Story Behind a Filled Sketchbook
"I was one of the lucky ones who was encouraged from a young age to create and encouraged at a young age too." Daniel said.
Daniel went to The Putney School, and then she went to Marlboro College.
Daniel was born and raised in New York City, but has been living in Vermont since 1984.
"I love Vermont, and I feel at home here." Daniel said.
While Vermont is Daniel's home, she has traveled around the world, utilizing her beauty into some of her pieces.
Daniel has shown extensively over the years, a few places include: Forbes Gallery in New York City, Columbus Museum of Art, a solo show at the Zanesville Museum of Art, and participated in the 2023 Biennial Juried Exhibition at the Riffe Gallery.
What to Fill With the Blank Pages
For anyone looking to start this genre of art, Daniel has a bit of advice: Let go of outcomes.
"In painting, we say we need to paint miles of canvas before we get kind of good at something… things can come out great, especially untrained, especially if you're open to the abstract, and you let go of outcomes."
Daniel will continue to work on the larger than life size paintings that take years to complete, keep a sketchpad on and keep drawing, and continue working on watercolor, which is a new medium–"Watercolor is more challenging with obviously the element of color, especially aiming to learn the transparent method, where I can't fix things with using white opaque paint I could, but I'm aiming to learn how to leave the spaces."
Daniel's paintings will be for sale and at an affordable price.
