New exhibit by Melissa Rubin goes on display at CX Silver Gallery

BRATTLEBORO-"Field Notes: Recent Work by Melissa Rubin" will be on exhibit from Friday, Jan. 17 through May 25 at CX Silver Gallery, 814 Western Ave. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The exhibit is described as comprising "visual notations referencing the understory, the world below the canopy of the trees, which is teeming with life, decay, the delicate balance in play, and the fragility of the natural environment. Described as a "meditative, emotional, and pictorial study," artwork in the exhibit alludes to the entangled, interconnected webs of trees, branches, flowing springs, the night sky, "and the wildlife that calls it home," say organizers.

The raw materials Rubin encounters become deep inspiration for her imagery and approach to her art: layers of papers, paints, various organic materials - such as wax, marble dust, carbon, silver leaf, and clay.

Rubin's work reflects the "expansive, psychological experience of the narrative the natural world reveals." Exploring the terrain and its impact on her relationship to the environment, she creates visual references to textures, branches, decay, and growth, "all woven together to form a depiction of her outer and inner landscape."

The media she uses functions as her personal vocabulary of expression, as proxy to emotional states of mind. She consciously works with materials that "help to facilitate a sense of light, darkness, mystery, and fragility."

The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 1 to 8 p.m. More information on the exhibit can be found at cxsilvergallery.com/melissa-rubin.
