BRATTLEBORO-Haptic Pictures and Latchis Arts present Braiding A New Life on Saturday, July 12, 4:30 p.m. in the main theater at the Latchis Theatre. Screening followed by a talk-back with local Guilford directors Willow O'Feral and Brad Heck, as well as Community Asylum Seekers Project (CASP) staff. Tickets at the door are $20+.
Braiding A New Life: From Ghana to the Green Mountains is a 36-minute documentary portraying an asylum seeker, Sarah, as she navigates life in Southern Vermont. The film is a love letter to Brattleboro and a passionate portrait of reciprocity, mutual aid, and the value of cross-cultural friendships and diverse community.
"We follow Sarah as she learns to drive with the help of a local volunteer; braids her friend Dora's hair; chats on the local radio station; listens to a Congolese refugee band at a house show in Vernon; shops at an African grocery in Springfield, Massachusetts; and prepares for her asylum case hearing with CASP's support," the filmmakers said in a news release. "Above all, this is a portrait of a community that weaves a shining net of support in relationship to one another and in commitment to a world in which immigrants are welcomed, valued and respected."
