WARDSBORO-This year's Gilfeather Turnip Festival is being held Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Wardsboro.
This event is billed by organizers as "America's best turnip culinary event showcasing Vermont's State Vegetable." Folks are invited to join with the whole town for a bowl of world-famous Gilfeather turnip soup at the outdoor soup kiosk, turnip-flavored treats, a farmers market, craft vendors, and turnip-themed merchandise.
Also on offer are an informative talk about Wardboro's turnips, children's games, more than 1,000 pounds of turnips, the library book sale, packets of turnip seeds to grow for next year, and much more.
"Last year, we introduced a new food sensation, turnip fries," said organizers. "We plan on offering them again this year. Hopefully, we won't run out!"
The highlight of the day is the Turnip Contest. Categories include Heaviest Turnip Grown in Wardsboro, Heaviest Turnip Grown Out of Wardsboro, Most Interesting Shape, Most Creative Name, and Best-Dressed Turnip.
Visitors can also participate in "The Best Raffle Ever," for a chance to win a handmade quilt. Tickets are $5 each, or 5 for $20.
Organizers promise "an exciting day of good food, great crafts, and a wonderful day with your friends and family." Parking is a $5 donation. For more information, go to wardsboropubliclibrary.org, GilfeatherTurnip.org, or wpltrustees@outlook.com.
