BRATTLEBORO-I have lived in Vermont for 57 years and have voted during 53 of them. This is the first time I have been excited about a governor's race.
At at time when there is so much criticizing of political opponents, Amanda Janoo is a breath of fresh air. She has the ability to be both realistic and hopeful, spending her energy coming up with creative solutions rather than getting angry about what hasn't been done.
At her meetings, she solicits suggestions from the audience about what has worked in each community. She generates hope based on what Vermonters have to offer rather than working from a deficit/fear model. She listens and truly cares.
I'm fed up with political leaders of both parties who are out of touch with working people and just support their rich buddies. Amanda is the opposite. She was born and raised in Vermont. Her loyalty is to Vermonters, especially to those whose lives are unaffordable. Like many of her generation, she can't afford to buy a house here, yet she chose to live here because she loves Vermont.
Some people think that all taxes are bad. I'm with Amanda in thinking that it is time that the wealthiest people - especially second-home owners and investors - pay more in taxes to support other programs. Doesn't it make sense that we prioritize people being able to buy first homes by taxing people who won't be financially hurt by a tax?
We need more younger people in this state, not investors getting rich off real estate. We are so lucky that Amanda Janoo is eager to step up to the plate and work hard.
