SAXTONS RIVER — Main Street Arts is offering three opportunities for shutterbugs to improve their skills under the guidance of professional photographer Bill Sumner.
Available Light Portrait Photography will meet Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, to understand how the camera works and take better portraits. The fee is $18 for members and $24 for nonmembers.
On Thursday, May 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a session on 360 Panoramic and High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography will explore using the camera to create “vistas” using techniques to increase contrast and enhance details in photos.
Time Lapse and HDR Photography meets on Thursday, May 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., to practice adding the dimension of time to photographs using HDR techniques.
The fee for either of these workshops is $12 for members and $16 for nonmembers. Generous scholarship assistance is available.
Athens-based Sumner began his photographic career as an assistant in New York in the creative cauldron of the late 1960s, apprenticing with some of the best photographers of the time. He has won many awards, and his work has been published in numerous books and magazines, including “Communication Arts” and “Graphis.”
Throughout his career, he has striven to be an innovator and is constantly experimenting with new approaches, both technical and directorial. Sumner is particularly interested in working with people who want to push the envelope in some way.
He has photographed in locations from Mexico and the Caribbean to small-town Vermont and everything in between, plus studio work from fashion and still life to corporate annual reports, sports, and lifestyle. Examples of his work can be seen at www.billsumner.com.
Registration is required for classes by calling 802-869-2960 or emailing info@mainstreetarts.org. Main Street Arts also hosts a photography club that meets the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
