WEST BRATTLEBORO — The 10th annual “Papercuts and Peace” exhibit, which was installed in the gallery spaces at All Souls Church on Labor Day, is titled “Peace-Inside and Out.”
The public is invited to an artists' reception on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. Enjoy a bountiful refreshment table of sweet and savory treats and a variety of beverages provided by the ASC Arts Committee.
This show focuses on the importance of creating and maintaining internal peace while working toward peace in the external world.
As in other shows, part of the exhibit involves collaboration, initially collaborations involving papercuts by Stuart Copans that were inspired by ancient tantric paintings used as the focus of meditation exercises.
More recent are collaborations between Lin Taggard and her teacher Don Fitzpatrick in which papercuts have been combined with harmonograms.
During the opening, there will be demonstrations of the creative processes involved in using harmonographs to create harmonograms, a process that can be as peaceful and meditative as the final products.
“Peace is a process, not an event,” Copans said in a news release, “and the integration of papercuts and harmonograms, of text and abstraction, of inside and outside, is an ongoing process that we hope will be visible both in the artworks of the exhibit and in the demonstrations during the opening."
The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to noon each weekday in September and October, during worship services and other public events in the building, and by appointment.
A reception is scheduled on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. Stop by to meet the artist and enjoy a bountiful refreshment table provided by the ASC Arts Committee.
