BRATTLEBORO-The Vermont Center for Photography (VCP), 10 Green St., announces the opening of "Of Land and Place," a juried exhibition exploring the profound relationship between humanity and the natural world.
The exhibition, juried by Sharon Harper and Karen Haas, features the work of 41 photographers from across the United States and Canada. It opens on Friday, March 7, with a public reception from 5 to 8 p.m., and runs through April 27.
"Of Land and Place" showcases a diverse range of photographic approaches, inviting viewers to contemplate the environment in all its variety. The selected works explore themes of time, transformation, and the enduring power of nature.
"We are so fortunate to have such robust participation from the national photography community, including that of our esteemed and highly regarded jurors, who are senior professionals from Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard's Visual Arts department," said Bernard van der Lande, VCP board member, in a news release. "The entries, whether finalist or not, amounted to a chorus of care for our environment and reflect VCP's role and relevance in catalyzing important conversations that reach beyond the artist community and invite input from all corners."
Running parallel to the photographic exhibit will be the immersive video project, Tree Grove Forest Community, by Harper. Filmed vertically and edited into an L-shaped diptych, the piece presents multiple time-space perspectives. The grove is nearly four centuries old and is interwoven with its community who voluntarily maintain the it, nesting humans within the geologic time scale of the living environment.
