PUTNEY-Since 2003, the Vermont Humanities Council has invited students, adults, and seniors across the state to read the same book and participate in a variety of community activities related to the book's themes. More than 200 different Vermont towns, cities, and villages have participated in Vermont Reads to date.
The 2024–25 book Gather is the first young adult novel by Kenneth Cadow, who drew upon his 20 years of working with middle and high school students as a teacher and administrator in rural Vermont to write this debut. Cadow was selected as one of five finalists for the prestigious National Book Award in young people's literature for Gather.
The Putney Public Library will host a series of programs in March related to Gather, and copies of this book are presently available to borrow.
On Wednesday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m., the Windham County Humane Society will present "Helping Our Community to Help Their Animals." This talk will share resources and services available to local pet owners and their animals. All ages are welcome.
On Tuesday, March 25, at 5 p.m., the library will host Vermont author M.T. Anderson. In this presentation geared to readers 8 years old and up, Anderson will discuss how living alone with a dog in the midst of the Covid shutdown in Vermont led to the writing of his Newbery Honor-winning fantasy Elf Dog and Owl Head. He'll talk about the bond between human and animal - and how it might be different in Vermont than in some other places. Kids are encouraged to bring and tell their own stories of the extraordinary animals they've known. All ages are welcome.
On Wednesday, March 26, at 4 p.m., the library will host a Teen Book talk about Gather with special guest Virgil the therapy dog. Ages 12–18.
All programs are free and accessible to those with disabilities. For more information, contact Putney Public Library at 802-387-4407 or julia@putneylibrary.org.
