New initiative brings vibrant events to Flat Street for youth in Brattleboro

BRATTLEBORO-On Saturday, July 19, 5 to 9 p.m., the Preston Lot on Flat Street will be transformed into Teen Street in what organizers say will be "a mecca of art, sports, food, and entertainment. Think First Friday, but designed exclusively with youth in mind."

Downtown Brattleboro Alliance, in partnership with The Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro, New England Youth Theatre, The Latchis Hotel and Theatre, and the Brattleboro Police Department are inviting teens to enjoy food trucks and live music by local youth musicians like the Emily Margaret Band, NCP Sound, Technicolor Ltd, and The Jackets.

"How much fun can you jam into a parking lot? A lot, it turns out," said organizers, with an inflatable obstacle course, a 2-on-2 basketball tournament, live screen printing and jewelrymaking, and a teen art market with goods by youth, for youth. 802 Soul Kitchen, Kona Ice, and the Sunshine Lemonade Company will be serving up affordable food and drink.

"Flat Street is long overdue for a shift in energy, identity, and narrative," said organizers. "Young people need places to be and opportunities to gather. Consider this an invitation to rethink how we engage with this space, and an invitation to join us in working towards the Flat Street we know is possible."
