Generosity Fair offers info on volunteer opportunities
SAXTONS RIVER - The public is invited to learn about volunteer opportunities for seniors Saturday, Nov. 8, at 3:15 p.m. in the Club Room at the 24 Main Street Community Building. This session is free and presented as part of the 2025 Generosity Fair.
Erica Walch will share the history of Green Mountain RSVP, present the volunteer opportunities available for people aged 55 and over and discuss the free-to-attend, volunteer-led strength training classes offered by Green Mountain RSVP.
Green Mountain RSVP is an AmeriCorps Seniors program that matches people aged 55 and older with volunteer opportunities in nonprofit organizations in Bennington, Windham, and Windsor counties. The biggest need for volunteers currently is as "friendly visitors" who spend 2–4 hours per month visiting with socially isolated seniors in their homes. For more information, contact Walch at 802-772-7875 or walch@svcoa.net.
Windham holds its annual harvest supper, square dance
WINDHAM - On Saturday, Nov. 8, Windham's annual Harvest Supper and Square Dance returns for another year. The dinner begins at 5 p.m. at the historic Windham Meeting House, 26 Harrington Rd., on the corner of Windham Hill Road. Look for the tall white steeple.
The traditional dinner is hosted and prepared by the Windham Community Organization (WCO). They will be serving ham, butternut squash, baked beans, scalloped potatoes (plus a gluten-free version), a vegetarian Mexican Cornbread casserole, salad, and sweet breads, with assorted homemade pies for dessert. The cost is $15 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, or $35 per family.
After dessert, Sally Newton will be calling a square dance. She will be accompanied by talented local musicians - most of whom are her relatives. Organizers say she explains the dance moves and "creates a fun atmosphere, so don't be bashful." Donations are appreciated for the musicians. All proceeds from this event benefit Windham area residents through WCO.
Townshend Historical Society holds annual meeting
TOWNSHEND - The Townshend Historical Society's 2025 annual meeting and election of officers will be held Sunday, Nov. 9, 3 p.m. at the Town Hall on Route 30.
After a brief meeting, there will be a program called "Views of Harmonyville," a series of photos by amateur photographer Lester A. Wheeler. The album the photos came from is dated 1912. A number of the views show the Route 30 area near what is now the 802 Credit Union branch office.
There are also some views of various rock formations in Townshend. One is titled "Boulder in Flynn Pasture." There is some discussion within the Society as to where this boulder is. Come to hear the research that has gone into that quest and perhaps volunteer to go look for it. Refreshments will follow the program. For more information, contact Historical Society president Charles E. Marchant at 802-365-7937.
