PUTNEY-Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music celebrate the season with an evening of traditional Irish and original holiday music by John Doyle and Cathie Ryan on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Next Stage.
"An Irish Christmas" is an evening with two of Irish music's artists sharing their memories of festive Christmas traditions in song, story, and the pure joy of the season.
Doyle and Ryan are longtime friends who have shared decades of musical collaboration. They have toured as a duo throughout Europe (rarely in the U.S.), are members of the all-star ensemble The Irish Music Masters, and are featured in the PBS special The Soul of Christmas. They say they share a deep love of traditional music, and they continue to contribute to the tradition with their original songs.
Over the past four decades as an instrumentalist, composer, producer, and singer-songwriter, Doyle has established himself as a versatile and creative voice in folk and traditional Irish music.
In 1994, Doyle brought his guitar stylings to the nascent Irish supergroup Solas. With Solas, he performed internationally to sold-out audiences and appeared on numerous television and radio programs. Since launching his solo career, Doyle has recorded two solo albums and is a sought-after accompanist and session player for artists including Joan Baez, Eileen Ivers, Tim O'Brien, Linda Thompson, and Seamus Egan,
Ryan has been a voice in Irish music for more than 35 years. She sings traditional Irish and American songs as well as crafts originals.
Ryan "is a captivating performer, known for shows that blend intimacy, power, and a touch of Irish storytelling." She has toured internationally at performing arts centers, festivals, folk clubs, and with symphony orchestras, and has been featured on national and public television and radio worldwide.
