Next Stage Arts, Twilight Music present Nordic folk music masters Frigg with Teho

PUTNEY-Next Stage Arts and Twilight Music proudly present an evening of Nordic folk music with Frigg, joined by special guests Teho, on Thursday, Feb. 5, at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 p.m.

Hailing from Finland, Frigg is an ensemble performing contemporary folk music. This Nordic sextet is made up of “true masters of the Finnish folk tradition,” organizers wrote in a news release, “delivering heart-bursting, life-affirming tunes with astonishing precision and joy.”

Named after the Norse goddess of love and fertility, Frigg has forged their own sound — “Nordgrass” — a fusion of Nordic folk and American bluegrass. Their signature violin-driven sound, propelled by strings and double bass, “is hypnotic, infectious, and irresistibly dance-worthy, appealing equally to folk, world, and classical audiences.”

Claiming 11 albums, nearly 1,000 performances across 30 countries, and numerous accolades — including Finnish Folk Album of the Year and Songlines Top of the World recognition — Frigg also features original songwriting. The band is approaching its 25th anniversary.

Opening the evening is Teho, a Finnish fiddle duo rooted in Nordic folk traditions that pushes musical boundaries. Hailing from Central Ostrobothnia — a region renowned for its rich folk music culture—Tero Hyväluoma and Esko Järvelä blend Finnish fiddling with Norwegian Halling, Swedish polska, bebop, Western swing, and contemporary folk.

Konsta Jylhä Competition Director Hannu Saha praised the duo as “extremely versatile professionals [...] mastering their instruments on a virtuoso level, giving them unlimited musical possibilities.”

Their debut album was nominated for a Finnish Grammy (Emma Awards) in 2018, and they have performed across Europe and North America. As Songlines contributor Seán Purser described Teho. as a “virtuosic and occasionally off-the-wall Finnish fiddle duo.”

Tickets are available at nextstagearts.org for $22 in advance, $25 at the door, and $10 for livestream access.
