Genealogy group meets Feb. 21

BRATTLEBORO — The next hybrid in-person and Zoom meeting of the Windham County Genealogy Interest Group (WCGIG) will focus on “Working with Handwritten Records for Genealogical Purposes,” presented by member Lynne Snyder, and “Using Google’s Gemini AI for Genealogy,” presented by Wayne Blanchard, Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main St.

In case of inclement weather, this meeting will be via Zoom only. It is free and open to all. Register at bit.ly/WCGIG2025. A Zoom link will be sent before the meeting.

Meet the candidates at RFPL

BELLOWS FALLS — On Saturday, Feb. 21, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., there will be a Rockingham Selectboard candidates forum at the Rockingham Free Public Library, 65 Westminster St.

This forum is for candidates seeking 1- and 3-year terms on the Rockingham Selectboard. The forum is a free event and will be moderated by Library Director Ian Graham.

This meeting will be in-person as well as accessible via live feed from Falls Area Community Television at bit.ly/853-rock.

No public skating on Feb. 22 at Withington Rink

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department says that, due to the Brattleboro Winter Carnival’s annual Glow Skate, there will be no public skating at Withington Rink on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Glow Skate takes place on the 22nd from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The admission fee for this event is $5 per person. Skate rentals are available for $3. Season passes and fee entry coupons are not accepted during this event.

Senior meal in Dummerston

DUMMERSTON — Evening Star Grange and Senior Solutions will hold their second meal of the month on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with take-outs available between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the in-house meal served at noon. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling the grange at 802-254-1138 and leaving name, phone number, number of meals needed and whether they are for eating in or taking out.

The menu includes meat or veggie lasagna, tossed green salad, and garlic bread, with bread pudding with raisins for dessert. Coffee, water, tea, and milk are available by request at every meal. For seniors 60 and above, a donation of $4 for those eating in-house is suggested; For those 59 and under and all take-outs, the suggested donation is $5.

Empty Bowls event benefits Townshend food shelf

TOWNSHEND — Empty Bowls Townshend is a grassroots event that takes place Thursday, Feb. 26, at Townshend Church on the Common, with seatings at 5 and 6 p.m.

“The concept is simple. The need is vast,” organizers wrote in a news release. “Be part of a movement to create awareness and alleviate hunger in our community: area artisans donate bowls; community members pay to attend an event where they select a bowl, eat a simple soup meal and reflect on area hunger.”

Tickets are $20 per person, and reservations are required. Go to emptybowlstownshend.com for more information. All proceeds benefit the Townshend Community Food Shelf, which serves Townshend, West Townshend, Newfane, Brookline, Jamaica, Athens, Wardsboro, Windham, and Winhall.

Returnables drive to help Interfaith Youth Group

BRATTLEBORO — To help local youth take a meaningful service trip in April, Putney Road Redemption Center at 36 Noah’s Lane in Brattleboro, and behind West Brattleboro Discount Beverages at 157 Marlboro Rd., is accepting donations of returnable cans and bottles at a “Returnables Drive.”

Proceeds will be directed to the Brattleboro Area Interfaith Youth Group service and learning trip to Charleston, South Carolina.

The group will volunteer with area nonprofits while learning the area’s history concerning slavery and today’s racial-economic disparities. If you’d like to donate more than a nickel a can, visit the group’s GoFundMe page at bit.ly/853-IYG, where you can donate with a credit card.
