Sammy and Brothers host concert and dance party at Sages May 23

BRATTLEBORO-The musical ensemble Sammy and Brothers will perform an all-ages show Saturday, May 23, at 2 p.m., at Sages Downstairs at the Latchis Hotel & Theatre.

The band’s “uplifting and infectious music” blends traditional African styles from DR Congo and East Africa with original compositions, wrote organizers in a news release.

There will be a reception with the band immediately following the performance.

Their performances “break down barriers between the band and audience, getting people singing and dancing in shared celebration of life and song. We’re very pleased to announce that Sammy and Brothers have been named a Latchis Arts Artist-in-Residence in support of their musical endeavors,” said Latchis Arts Executive Director Jon Potter.

Siblings Israel Mbombo, Samuel Divinda (known as Sammy), Gershom Mbombo, and Shekinah Pemba have been playing together as a family from a young age. They say they met Noah Stires at church, and “immediately connected through music.”

This fundraising performance will enable them to record their first album at Northfire Recording Studio in Amherst, Massachusetts. The recording will be produced by Garrett Sawyer and Peter Siegel of the Gaslight Tinkers band.

Sammy and Brothers plan a return to Sages once the recording is complete for a record release party. For more information contact Julianne Kaplan at kaplanj2014@gmail.com.

Tickets for the show and reception are available at latchis.com. Kids 10 and under are admitted free of charge.
