Retreat Farm presents natural dye workshop series

BRATTLEBORO-Looking ahead to a colorful summer, the Retreat Farm announces “Harvesting Hues,” a natural dye workshop series led by artist and educator, Kate Milliken, and featuring fiber artist Gail Callahan. The series invites participants of all ages and experience levels to explore the remarkable colors hidden in food scraps, garden plants, and the natural world.

The Saturday workshops unfold with the season: start by turning onion skins and avocado peels into rich dyes in “Compost Dyeing” (June 20), then explore turmeric sun printing in “Antho-Who!? Sun Printing with Turmeric” (July 18).

In August, head into Retreat Farm’s newly replanted Hope Garden to harvest dye plants straight from the soil, and learn about processing natural dyes (Aug. 1). Then head into fall by pressing Hope Garden plants into fabric in a celebratory Eco-Printing workshop (Sept. 6). More opportunities to explore the vibrant world of plant-based arts will be added over the summer.

Harvesting Hues is part of Retreat Farm’s new Land & Its People Initiative — a program exploring the deep, layered histories of the land and the communities who have shaped it, and who have been shaped by it.

Register for the workshops at retreatfarm.ticketspice.com/harvesting-hues. A limited number of free tickets are available — contact ksullivan@retreatfarm.org to inquire.
