Safety and sobriety checkpoint planned in Windham County
BRATTLEBORO — The Windham County Sheriff’s Office will be partnering with other local area law enforcement agencies to conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Windham County during the month of September.
As of Aug. 24, Vermont roadways have seen 31 fatal crashes resulting in 34 fatalities. Of these 31 crashes, 15 operators were suspected of operating their vehicles under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.
“By conducting this checkpoint, the law enforcement agencies of Windham County work toward a common goal of keeping our roadways safe by reducing the number of impaired driving crashes throughout the state,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “If you drink, plan a sober ride home. Drive safe.”
Parents’ Night at Twin Valley
WHITINGHAM — Twin Valley Middle High School will host a Parents’ Night open house for students, parents, and caregivers on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Parents and caregivers who attend will be provided with their student’s schedule and are invited to attend mini-classes where teachers will introduce themselves, share their curriculum, explain class expectations and grading procedures, and answer questions. The mini-classes will each be approximately 12 minutes in length.
While the emphasis is on meeting teachers and discussing classroom academics, there will also be an introductory session with school administration in the auditorium. First Friday BBQ in BF
BELLOWS FALLS — The First Baptist Church of Bellows Falls, 9 Church St., will hold a First Friday Fundraiser Friday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., to benefit the Springfield Humane Society.
The menu includes barbecue chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, green salad, chips, beverage, and dessert. Suggested donation is $9.
Estey Organ Museum open for Gallery Walk
BRATTLEBORO—The Estey Organ Museum will open its doors during Gallery Walk Friday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitors are invited to come and play all the organs in the museum’s collection of instruments made between 1846 and 1959.
While most museums are silent and forbid touching, the Estey is unique. Museum hosts say, “Please touch: Sit down and play! Make the reed and pipe organs come alive again.”
The collection includes melodeons, reed and pipe organs, a collection of images by Life magazine photographer Clemens Kalischer, and miniature displays of the workshop where electronic organs were developed. Children can play the small organs just their size.
The walk-through pipe organ from a church in Hinsdale allows visitors to walk behind the console to gain an inside view of the components. Players of the The Style T reed organ will need a helper to turn a crank to operate pumps which suck air through the reeds to make the sound of notes.
The museum, is located at 110 Birge St. in Building #5. Look for the banner and walk back to the rear. Parking is free and the museum is ADA accessible. Admission to the museum is free during Gallery Walk but donations are always welcome.
Senior lunch in Dummerston
DUMMERSTON — Evening Star Grange and Senior Solutions will serve their next Senior Lunch Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Grange Hall in Dummerston Center, with takeouts available between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the in-house meal served at noon.
Reservations are highly suggested and can be made by calling the hall at 802-254-1138. Leave name, phone number, number of meals desired, and whether the meals are for takeout or in house.
The menu for Sept. 9 is meat lasagna, cucumber and tomato salad, and garlic bread. Vegetarian option is vegetarian lasagna. Dessert is pineapple upside-down cake. A suggested donation is $4 for those age 60 and above eating inside. For those age 59 and under and all takeouts, the suggested donation is $5.
Putney plant adventures with Rich Grumbine
PUTNEY — Rich Grumbine will offer a plant amble in the Forest for Learning landscape, next to the Town Swimming Pool, 172 Westminster Rd. Saturday, Sept. 12, at 9 a.m. This free event is sponsored by the Putney Public Library.
Participants will focus their attention and discussion on the field and forest herbaceous plants of September, and the common trees and shrubs encountered along the way. Interested amblers should plan to be out for about 90 minutes, dressed for the weather and tick bite prevention.
