Children's authors plan holiday book signing

BRATTLEBORO-ByWay Books & More, 399 Canal St., will host three children's authors - Eileen Christelow, Karen Hesse, and Liza Ketchum - for a book signing Saturday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"Each renowned author is a master of their craft," wrote Severia Draike, proprietor, in a news release. "They have been in a writer's group together for many years. This is an opportunity to not only purchase signed copies of their books, but to personally meet the authors and talk about their experiences as successful local writers."

Christelow is well known for her Five Little Monkeys picture book series for ages 2-6. She has authored and illustrated many children's picture books inspired by true stories and with reappearing characters who enhance creative learning.

Two of her nonfiction books are Vote! which explains everything to know about voting and democracy, and Robins! How They Grow Up, which follows two young robins through their first year. Both books "have beautiful illustrations, lots of humor, and are full of kid-pleasing details," Drake said. Christelow resides in Brattleboro.

Hesse received the Newbery Medal for Out of the Dust, published by Scholastic in 1997. The novel, told in verse, is the story of a teenage girl struggling with her family during the Great Depression and the Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the 1930s.

Hesse's other novels address familiar themes from the perspective of middle-grade children who must overcome adversity. Hesse writes historical fiction, dystopian fiction, and realistic fiction for children of all ages, from 4 to young adult. Hesse resides in Brattleboro.

Ketchum, a lifelong educator, became a children's book author soon after college and has over 17 published works. Her works include middle grade and young adult fiction and nonfiction.

Her adult memoir, The Last Garden, is illustrated by local artist Bobbi Angell. Begin with a Bee, a nonfiction picture book, is about the life cycle of one queen rusty-patched bumblebee. Turtles Heading Home, an account of rescuing sea turtles off Cape Cod, is a nonfiction book for middle grade animal lovers and conservationists. Ketchum divides her time between Dorset, and Watertown, Massachusetts.

All are invited to meet, chat, and shop for gifts signed by these local authors. Children are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 802-490-8014 or email contact@bywaybooks.co.
