HINSDALE, N.H.-Community members will gather in Hinsdale along the banks of the Ashuelot River Saturday, May 23, to celebrate World Fish Migration Day, a global event recognizing “the remarkable journeys of migratory fish and the importance of healthy, free-flowing rivers,” wrote organizers in a news release.
The free, family-friendly event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millstream Riverfront Park and Community Center, 19 Main St. It is part of a worldwide celebration connecting communities across the globe around river conservation.
The event invites residents and visitors of all ages to learn, explore, and connect through a variety of hands-on and interactive activities, such as a sturgeon touch tank, offering a rare, hands-on look at these ancient migratory fish; a fish passage obstacle course illustrating the challenges fish face as they move upstream; hourly screenings of the short conservation documentary Love Flows; and interactive river science and conservation activities.
There will also be all-ages community art projects, including murals and button-making; local food vendors; and opportunities to connect with local conservation organizations and community partners.
World Fish Migration Day “highlights the extraordinary distances migratory fish travel — sometimes thousands of miles — and the rivers, streams, and ecosystems that support them along the way.” Organizers said events like the Hinsdale celebration help build local understanding of how river restoration, dam removal, and habitat connectivity benefit fish, wildlife, and communities alike.
The event is co-presented by the town of Hinsdale, the Connecticut River Conservancy, and The Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire. For more information, visit nature.org/nhwfmd.
