Conservation District plans a ‘Plant Palooza’

PUTNEY-The Windham County Natural Resources Conservation District will mark its 80th birthday with a plant-themed party.

The district is expanding its annual plant sale into an event celebrating native plants, gardening, and conservation. “Plant Palooza” will take place Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to noon at Green Mountain Orchards, 130 West Hill Rd.

As in previous years, pre-ordered plants can be picked up. A larger selection of plants will be available for day-of purchases than offered in previous years’ sales. The plants available for sale consist primarily of native plant species and do not include any harmful introduced plant varieties.

Customers can learn about native plants, gardening, pollinators, local wildlife, and more from local environmental and gardening organizations.

Organizations include the UVM Extension Master Gardeners, The Xerces Society, Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center, and the Southeast Vermont Cooperative Invasive Species Management Association. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet educational animals brought by the Vermont Museum of Natural History.

“Getting Started with Native Plants,” a talk with Devon Snyder, starts at9:30 a.m.Snyder is an ecologist with a background in plant community dynamics, ecological restoration, and land management. Snyder owns and operates a natural garden design and consulting company in northern Vermont.

The District will be celebrating 80 years of conservation with a birthday cake and raffle prizes for event visitors. To find more, visit bit.ly/863-plant. The district is also seeking volunteers to for the event. To learn more, visit windhamcountynrcd.org/volunteer-with-us.
